While You Were Gone

Amelia Vinerpoem

While you were gone

I climbed mount everest
I jumped out of an airplane at full speed
I made chocolate from scratch
I bought a pet monkey

This is to say-
While you were gone
I ascended the mountain of questions
which lead to the summit of change
I witnessed the earth from a distant sky
and jumped without sign of a landing strip

This is to say
While you were gone

I felt what it is to know the thrill
of taking a long awaited risk
I savored the sweet
of quiet solo time
I didn't let the fear
of going at it alone
turn me against
this ever evolving
mighty playful
heart

And while we're here
Let me say-
Sometimes
metaphor is the departure
An invitation to pack up and go
To ride into the great unknown

And other times
And other times
metaphor is returning home
after a freewheeling ride
In the great unknown
